I never thought I’d be one to say this, especially since the United States is absent, but I’m really into the World Cup this year. Sure, I haven’t played soccer since orange slices were used as mouth guards, but I find the scope of the event and how much the rest of the world has riding on this to be pretty fascinating. Hell, I may even start referring to soccer as futbol. Yeah, probably not.
Despite me being a huuuuge soccer guy now, I still cannot understand the flopping situation. It’s egregious. Flopping isn’t just present in soccer (see: James Harden), but it is the most theatrical in soccer. It isn’t enough to just hit the deck, but you have to writhe in pain for 30 seconds to sell it.
During Wednesday’s group stage match of this year’s World Cup, Morocco’s Medhi Benatia wanted to have a little chat with Portuguese defender Pepe. Benatia tapped Pepe on the right shoulder, sending Pepe to the ground and luckily not out in an ambulance.
Here are some noteworthy Twitter reactions.
