Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest football players to ever grace the game. Undoubtedly in the Top 5, alongside Lionel Messi, Maradona, Pele, and then any one of either Johan Cruyff, Zinedine Zidane, George Best, or Franz Beckenbauer. His status as an all-time great is undeniable.

What’s also undeniable, however, is that the 37-year-old has done wonders in recent months to tarnish his legacy. Not only did Ronaldo force his way out of Manchester United with immature media tactics, but he ultimately signed with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, which directly contradicts his assertions that he left Manchester United in search of Champions League football.

To make matters worse for the former Real Madrid and Juventus star, Lionel Messi unequivocally passed him by in the GOAT debate thanks to Argentina’s recent World Cup victory.

Given that Ronaldo is set to make about $200 million per year playing for Al-Nassr, it’s easy to understand why he made such a decision — virtually anyone would do the same. What’s tough to watch, however, is Ronaldo pretending that the reality of the situation is something else entirely.

During his introductory press conference in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo touted that his “work was done in Europe because he won everything” and he received offers from clubs in Europe, Brazil, Australia, and the United States. “Man clubs tried to sign me,” he said.

And that’s likely true. But what Ronaldo leaves out, of course, is that the American team he almost signed with is… Sporting Kansas City. And that getting pitches from the Australian A-League isn’t exactly the sign of an elite footballer. The fact remains that had Ronaldo gotten a viable offer from a Champions League-qualified club in Europe, he would’ve taken it.

And the fact that he hasn’t suggests that the only choice he was left with was to play for money somewhere, so he chose the place that would pay him the most to do so. Enjoy scoring wildly expensive goals that no one care about, Cristiano.
