The MLS is pure chaos. It averaged over 2.5 goals per game last season which was slightly down from the year prior and hopefully not a trend of things to come.
But the beauty of the MLS is a game can go from 0-0 in the 85th minute to a 3-3 final score. Chaos can erupt at any minute and it seems to happen much more frequently than in other professional soccer leagues. Case in point, this MLS goal below after a truly chaotic sequence of events.
Charlotte FC faced the Columbus Crew on Wednesday night in a game that would finish 2-2. The first goal of the game is absurd even by MLS standards. Both sides test the goalie being out of position but it eventually works for the team that opens scoring. I won’t give away too much but you can watch below on Twitter and/or YouTube, whichever you’d prefer.
Columbus Crew scores ‘most MLS goal’ in years after chaotic sequence of events against Charlotte FC
The Twitter video shows the full sequence whereas the YouTube video below only shows the second half:
Even in MLS I've never seen a sequence like this before. pic.twitter.com/djgq9UXy8q

Here’s that goal again, but the YouTube highlight cuts out the first half of the action:
Someone has to get benched after that. All of them, maybe? I’m not even sure where to begin when handing out awards for mistakes…
What soccer fans were saying about that absurd goal
You wouldn’t see a goal similar to this MLS goal happen in any major league in Europe, at least not more than once a decade:

There’s a phrase for this type of action…
MLS Gone Wild

A nice smooth turn of a phrase here:
Sun goes down earlier this time of year.
That means MLS After Dark starts that much earlier.

Danny Cepero's 2008 turf bounce vs #Crew96 was 81 yards.

The defense is set, this one’s on the goalie and really everyone that isn’t communicating:
I’m no analyst, but I feel like when a free kick is awarded the other team should attempt to set a defense of some kind.

He saw his shot and took it:
Wow. I am speechless. Very opportunistic strike, and credit to him for even shooting that.

Something similar to this happened to my team in HS. We were playing IMG Academy which some of you may be familiar with. During the regular season, they’d roll out a squad full of home-schooled middle schoolers, and then when it came time for the district playoffs (everyone qualified) they’d send out future professionals including USMNT great Demarcus Beasley who was in this game. Their goalie actually took the free kick and scored like this. Absolutely devastating…
