When Charlotte Football Club was awarded an MLS expansion franchise in 2019, there was no way to imagine what played out on Saturday night. After beginning the season on the road, the club held its inaugural home opener at Bank of America Stadium in front of a record-breaking crowd.
The stadium, which houses the Carolina Panthers in the fall, is a temporary home for the new club until its permanent stadium can be built. Bank of America Stadium has a capacity of 75,412 and the city’s first Major League Soccer match got pretty close.
With 74,479 people in attendance, Charlotte broke the attendance record by nearly 2,000. The city showed up and showed out.
Prior to the match, “The Voice” winner Michelle Brooks-Thompson was set to sing the national anthem. However, not long into her performance, technical issues caused her vocals to cut out early in the anthem.
In response, nearly 75,000 full-voiced soccer fans took over. The crowd picked up where Brooks-Thompson left off and led a goosebump-inducing rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.

Although Charlotte was not able to get the result it wanted, its first game in Charlotte could not have been a bigger success. The fanfare was incredible and the moment in which the crowd stepped in to finish out the national anthem was absolute scenes.
There have been moments like this in the past. However, of them all, Charlotte FC’s is the loudest. The fans really stepped up and it made for a remarkable moment.
If Saturday night is any indication of what is to come from the new club, it is going to be special.
