Lane Kiffin has never been shy about his recruiting pitches and is not afraid to go after some big fish. His most recent effort, however, is his biggest yet.
The 46-year-old head coach of Ole Miss football needs a new kicker and he’s eyeing one of the greatest soccer players of all-time— Lionel Messi.
Messi, who has played his entire senior career to date with Barcelona, is a free agent for the first time. He is 34 years old and has anywhere between two and five years remaining at the top level of competition.
Kiffin wants him to make the move not only to the United States, but to American football. The Rebels enter 2021 with questions at the kicker position and the head ball coach thinks that Messi could be of assistance.
The thing is, Kiffin, offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby and Ole Miss are aggressive with their offense. Play-calls are aggressive, quick and analytic-driven.
As such, the analytics say to go for it on fourth down more often. That makes it unlikely that whoever wins the kicker job will be a large factor beyond kickoffs and extra points.
In a lot of ways, with a boot like Messi’s, that makes for a perfect marriage. He wouldn’t have to worry about keeping it between the uprights from beyond 20 yards.
Messi has four years of college eligibility remaining and could turn a chapter in his career with the NFL in his sights. With collegiate athletes now allowed to profit from Name, Image and Likeness, Messi could make a fortune.
Seems like a no-brainer.
