After earning the well-deserved nickname of “The No Fun League,” the NFL recently decided to relax its rules concerning touchdown celebrations by deciding players should actually be allowed to have fun on the football field. Last season saw plenty of great dances and preplanned rituals after players crossed the goal line but none of them were able to compete with the likes of Terrell Owens, who was an absolute innovator when it came to commemorating a touchdown.
Over the course of his career, TO celebrated TDs in a number of ways, including commandeering some pom poms from a cheerleader, dumping a fan’s popcorn over his face, and, of course, his magnum opus: taking a Sharpie out of his sock and signing the football after scoring.
Owens might be the G.O.A.T. when it comes to post-scoring antics but a different kind of football player did what he could to live up to his legacy on Wednesday. Last night, the New York Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips put his squad on top after scoring the only goal of the match— which also happened to be his 100th career goal in the MLS.
Based on what I know, most soccer players would celebrate by falling to their knees and sliding across the field in a move that looks more painful than it must be, but Wright-Phillips had come prepared.
Wright-Phillips had scored his 99th goal just four days before this one so I have to give him a lot of credit on the impressive turn-around when it came to making one of the cockiest custom jerseys I’ve ever come across.
I’m sure TO would be proud.
