Absolutely nobody showed up to watch the United States lose to Panama in soccer on Thursday night. SoFi Stadium was mostly empty at opening kickoff and even the late-arriving Los Angeles crowd struggled to fill more than half of the venue.
It was an embarrassing showing from start to finish for a country that is supposed to be in its prime.
The United States Soccer Federation deserves a lot of the blame for this poor showing. This country refuses to show any kind of competence when it comes to soccer and that starts at the top.
First and foremost, this most recent match was scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PST on the first Thursday of March Madness. Scheduling was likely out of U.S. Soccer’s control, but the sports calendar conflict certainly did not help get butts in the seats.
In addition, U.S. Soccer hosted Panama in the semifinal round of the CONCACAF Nations League at an NFL stadium in Los Angeles. The stadium was too big for the demand to begin with. And not only do most people have to work until 5, traffic in L.A. is typically a nightmare between the hours of 3-7. Fans who wanted to watch the full 90 minutes were forced to take time off of work just to gamble with uncontrollable congestion on the 110, 105 or 405.
As a result, very few people were in their seats in time for the national anthem.
Before the national anthems, Christian Pulisic looked around the stadium, saw the low attendance and smiled awkwardly. “

It was a ghost town at kickoff.

United States and/or Panama fans who were unable to get off work in time for kickoff arrived around halftime or even later. They got to witness a massive upset on a final-minute winner. Panama defeated the United States on its home soil in front of a very subpar crowd.
I can't lie… This is one of the COLDEST CELEBRATIONS and one of the most COOLEST things I have ever seen in Football.

Panama scoring a Last Minute winner vs USA, who should have scored like 3 times in the 10 minutes I watcged.
Thierry Henry's swagger deserved this haha. pic.twitter.com/wq4yMAPQKF
They ran over to celebrate with Thierry Henry. It was a demoralizing defeat for the U.S.

Fortunately, there was nobody there to witness the ugly loss. Everybody stayed home to watch basketball and/or had to work and/or did not want to deal with Los Angeles traffic.
Mexico also played a role in the low attendance. CONCACAF sold tickets to both semifinal matches in the same booklet. It was not possible to purchase tickets for only one session.
Canada played Mexico in the second semifinal after the United States lost to Panama. The amount of Mexican soccer fans in L.A. far outnumber the amount of U.S. soccer fans in L.A. so the crowd for the second match was much larger than the first. Still not full, but at least three times the size.

Thursday night was a poor showing from United States soccer from start to finish. Not only did the fans decide to do anything else, Panama pulled the upset. Pathetic.
