Soccer referees tend to deal with plenty of verbal abuse over the course of a match, and there are some occasions where things end up getting physical. However, you’d be hard-pressed to find a stranger scenario that falls under that second umbrella than a game in Germany that was called off after the lead official got bitten in the testicle.

Most people who decide to be a referee do so knowing they’re signing up for a fairly thankless job where they’re essentially expected to get every call right and will subsequently be subjected to plenty of ill will if they fail to live up to that impossible standard.

It’s a bit easier to stomach that reality if you’re a ref who works at the highest level of your sport and receives the salary that tends to come with that particular position, but there are plenty of other officials who are largely doing it for the love of the game by grinding in lower levels where the compensation leaves a lot to be desired.

That’s the case for the soccer refs who are tasked with officiating games at the Kreisliga level in Germany, which is comprised of amateur teams that fall at least eight tiers below the Bundesliga that serves as the country’s premier organization.

Last Saturday, referee Stefan Kahler was set to oversee a Kreisliga C showdown between Taxi II and Rot-Weiss Mulheim III in the city of Duisburg and was making the rounds to ensure every player had the ID cards required to take part in the contest before it kicked off.

Unfortunately, The Sun reports things took a very unexpected turn when Kahlfer fell victim to the cringe-inducing injury he outlined in the match report for a game that wasn’t ultimately played, saying:

“While I was checking the FC Taxi players’ ID, a small child was doing warm-up exercises alongside the players.

He came closer and closer to me, then suddenly—to my complete surprise—gave me a sharp bite in my left testicle.

I did not start the game, because of the pain I was in and the situation. It was the child of one of the FC Taxi players who was to blame.”

The match was postponed and will be played later in the season, and it’s safe to assume the guys representing FC Taxi are hoping Mahler isn’t going to be assigned to too many more of their games.
