Professional athletes are incredible, and even a mediocre professional athlete would blow your mind if they showed up to your local YMCA or rec league to play against amateurs. But, sometimes, even the best professional athletes make a mistake so egregious that they remind all of us that they are indeed human, just like you and I.

That’s exactly what Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez did on Wednesday. Nunez was served up a crucial goal on a platter in the team’s Premier League match against Aston Villa, only to send it over the bar to cost his team two points in the standings.

Nunez, who Liverpool signed for a transfer fee of over $100 million in 2022, has been rather inconsistent in his time with The Reds. In 84 matches, he has just 24 Premier League goals. That is not a good record for a striker on a top team like Liverpool.

Liverpool was taking on Aston Villa on Wednesday, hoping to extend their seven-point lead in the table over Arsenal. They fell behind 2-1, before Trent Alexander-Arnold equalized in the 2nd half. And, Darwin Nunez had a golden chance to take the lead. But, disaster struck.

How in the world does he miss that? It was an incredible pass by Dominik Szoboszlai, perfectly weighted and right in stride. It was just a terrible finish. The expected goals, or xG, a measure that grades the quality of chances, was 0.89. That’s remarkably high.

After the miss, the memes were out.

The match ended up a draw at 2-2. Liverpool does extend their lead to 8 points, though they’ve played one more match than Arsenal. Who knows, that miss could really matter at the end of the season.
