Former Major League Baseball star Randy Johnson did just about everything there is to do during his hall of fame career. Johnson is a 10-time all-star, a five-time Cy Young Award winner and a World Series champion. And yet whenever fans think of him, the first thing that comes to mind is often the moment he accidentally obliterated an ill-fated bird that flew in the path of one of his pitches.
The bird did not live to tell the tale. However, we saw what was essentially a replay of the situation in an English Football League Two match between Grimsby and visiting Port Vale.

The moment occurred in the 26th minute of the match when a Grimsby defender received the ball from a throw-in and booted it upfield. But rather than finding a teammate, the ball clattered off an unknowing seagull and dropped, conveniently, directly to a Grimsby player.
Randy Johnson Still Can’t Shake His Infamous Bird Incident
Fair play to the seagull, (s)he took it on the chin (do seagulls have chins) and continued about his or her day. As did Grimsby, which went on to win 3-0 and pull level with Port Vale on 37 points, good enough for sixth in the table.
Sadly, the bird Johnson smoked with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball did not have as much.
“People go, ‘Hey aren’t you the pitcher that hit the bird?’ And I look at ’em and I go, ‘I played 22 years! And I did a lot more than kill a bird,'” he said in an interview this summer.
He sure did. But how many times are you gonna get a chance to see a bird get absolutely destroyed by the ball at a sporting event? Apparently, the answer is as least “two.” Here’s hoping no animal of the avian variety tries its luck as a NASCAR race anytime soon.
